Best used cars under $20,000, and what they really cost per month

By Mihir · Updated November 2026 · Numbers from the CarBudgetFit calculator

The sticker price is only part of it. Here is what a $20,000 used car costs each month once you add insurance, gas and upkeep, and which popular models you can find at that price.

All-in per month$678
Loan payment$374
Insurance, gas, upkeep$304
Income to afford it~$50,000

A $20,000 used car costs about $678 a month to own

For a compact car that is a $374 loan payment plus about $304 for insurance, gas and upkeep. To keep that under 20% of take-home pay you need roughly $50,000 a year in salary. A bigger down payment brings the payment down; every extra $1,000 down saves about $21 a month.

Best-selling cars you can find under $20,000

These are the best-selling vehicles in the US this year whose typical 3-year-old, mid-trim price is under $20,000, ranked by sales. Popular cars are easier to find, easier to get parts for and easier to resell.

Just over $20,000 at three years old: Toyota Corolla ($21,800), Honda Civic ($23,000), Nissan Sentra ($20,100), Chevrolet Trailblazer ($20,800), Nissan Kicks ($20,200). A 4-year-old one, a lower trim or higher miles will usually bring these under $20,000 too.

Prices are estimates for a 3-year-old car with a mid-level trim, worked out from each model's new starting price. Lower trims, more miles or an extra year of age will bring them in cheaper.

The same $20,000, by type of car

The loan payment on a $20,000 car is the same $374 whatever kind it is. What changes is the cost to run it. At $20,000, an entry luxury SUV costs about $218 a month more than a hybrid car, mostly from insurance and fuel.

Assumes good credit (9.5% APR used, 6.9% new), a 5-year loan, $4,000 down, 6% sales tax plus $600 in fees, 12,000 miles a year, gas at $3.10 and full-coverage insurance at typical rates. Your numbers will differ; the calculator lets you change every one of these.

Before you buy a used car at this price

  • Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic will check it for about $100 to $200, which is cheap compared with one surprise repair.
  • Check for open recalls. Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Recall repairs are free at any dealer for that brand.
  • Get pre-approved for the loan first. A credit union rate is often lower than the dealer's, and it stops the conversation from turning into "what monthly payment do you want?"
  • Get an insurance quote on the exact car. It can swing by $50 a month or more between two similar cars.

Common questions

Is $20,000 a good budget for a used car?

It is about what a typical used car sells for in late 2026 when you look at popular compacts and small crossovers. With $4,000 down and good credit, a $20,000 car costs about $678 a month all in. Whether that is a good budget depends on your take-home pay: keeping it under 20% means bringing home at least $3,390 a month.

How much is the monthly payment on a $20,000 used car?

With $4,000 down, 6% sales tax and fees, and a 5-year loan at 9.5% APR, the loan payment is about $374 a month. At a 4-year loan it is about $447, and at 6 years about $325.

What else should I budget for besides the payment?

Insurance, gas and upkeep add roughly $304 a month for a compact car and more for SUVs and trucks. Also keep money aside for tires, brakes and registration, which come up every year or two.
